What is commonkind?

We’re a Brisbane-based, volunteer-led nonprofit that creates age-appropriate community service opportunities for children, young people, and families. Our mission is to evolve Australia from the “lucky country” to the “loving country” through acts of kindness.

+

Why choose commonkind?

We’re laser-focused on child-inclusive volunteering. We design service opportunities that are safe, meaningful, and developmentally appropriate for children, youth, and families. We also partner with schools, organisations, and charities to create collaborative, impactful experiences.

+

Who can volunteer with us?

We welcome children, youth, families, and adults. We’re proud to include even our youngest citizens in meaningful service.

For Parents

For parents and families of volunteers.

+

Can we volunteer as a family?

Yes! We love seeing families volunteer together, especially through our Follow Your Heart and Home is Where the Heart Is programs.

+

Is my child too young to volunteer?

Not at all. We welcome children of all ages and design activities that are safe and developmentally appropriate.

+

What kinds of activities can my child do?

Activities are tailored to the age and stage of each child participating. Please let us know if you or your child require any accommodations. A small sample of some of the activities your child can do are:

  • Pack hygiene kits for families of children in long-term hospital stays
  • Help prepare booklists for disadvantaged Australian students
  • Make cards for residents of aged care communities
  • Sort and pack donations
  • Participate in mutually beneficial intergenerational learning
+

What is the Heart to Heart Intergenerational Learning Program?

This program connects children with older Australians to share stories, build empathy, and collaborate on service projects. It’s a beautiful way to foster mutual respect and understanding across generations.

+

Do we need to commit to regular volunteering?

No. We offer flexible opportunities, from one-off events to ongoing involvement.

+

Is volunteering safe for children?

Yes. We follow best practices for child safety and ensure all activities are supervised. All our volunteers have current Working With Children Checks (Bluecards for QLD).

+

Will my child learn anything from volunteering?

Absolutely. Volunteering helps children develop empathy, leadership, teamwork, and a sense of civic responsibility.

+

What’s in it for me and my child?

You’ll get to spend quality time together while helping others. Your child will build empathy, confidence, and leadership skills — and you’ll be part of a community that values kindness and inclusion.

+

Why should I we try it?

If your child’s current activities don’t include service or community engagement, this is a chance to introduce them to something deeply meaningful. We make volunteering easy, flexible, and fun — even from home.

+

Why choose commonkind?

We’re experts in child-inclusive volunteering. Our programs are designed with families in mind, and we offer flexible options that fit your schedule and values. Plus, we’re a registered charity, so your support goes directly to helping others.

+

Can my child’s school get involved?

Yes. We partner with schools through our Learn by Heart program.

+

Are there costs involved?

Most activities are free. Some may suggest optional donations or supplies, but we aim to keep volunteering accessible.

+

How else can I support commonkind?

You can donate, share our mission, advocate for child-inclusive volunteering, or offer your own time and skills.

For Schools (Learn by Heart)

Common questions about our schools programs.

+

What is Learn by Heart?

It’s our curriculum-aligned service learning initiative that helps students engage in meaningful community service while meeting educational outcomes.

+

What’s in it for our school community?

You’ll enhance your curriculum with real-world service learning that builds empathy, civic engagement, and leadership. Students will connect classroom learning with community impact.

+

Why should we change from our current approach?

Traditional fundraising or charity drives often miss the mark on student engagement. Our Learn by Heart program is hands-on, curriculum-aligned, and designed to foster deeper understanding and long-term values.

+

Why should we partner with commonkind?

We’re specialists in child-led service learning. We work directly with educators to tailor programs to your school’s needs, and we make it easy to integrate kindness into your school culture.

+

How does it work?

We collaborate with schools to design and deliver age-appropriate service sessions that align with your values and curriculum goals.

+

What age groups can participate?

We work with all school-aged children, from early years to secondary school.

What kinds of activities are included?

These sessions are typically large-format whole class or whole year group sessions where students might:

  • Pack food hampers
  • Knit or crochet to create baby blankets for vulnerable newborns
  • Create kindness campaigns
  • Participate in intergenerational learning
+

Is it aligned with the Australian Curriculum?

For Organisations (Work of Heart)

For organisations looking to get involved.

What is Work of Heart?

It’s our corporate volunteering initiative that allows organisations to engage in meaningful service activities, often alongside children and families.

+

What’s in it for our team?

You’ll boost morale, strengthen team bonds, and make a real difference — all while engaging in meaningful service. Our activities are inclusive and family-friendly, so your staff can bring their children too.

+

Why should we change from our current CSR or team-building activities?

Many corporate volunteering programs are adult-only or disconnected from your values. We offer purpose-driven experiences that align with your mission and engage your whole team — including families.

+

Why choose commonkind?

We’re flexible, creative, and values-driven. We’ll work with you to design a service experience that fits your goals and culture, and we make it easy to get started.

+

Can we host a volunteering event at our workplace?

Yes. We can facilitate on-site or off-site events tailored to your organisation.

+

How do we get involved?

Reach out via our Get In Touch page and we’ll explore options together.

For Charities

+

What’s in it for our organisation?

You’ll gain access to a motivated volunteer base, increased awareness, and practical support like donation sorting, campaign amplification, and youth-led initiatives.

+

Why should we change from our current volunteer model?

If your current model excludes children or families, you’re missing out on a powerful source of energy and empathy. We help you tap into that potential safely and effectively and without the hassle and logistics (insurance? child safety? risk management? etc) of organising it yourself.

+

Why should charities choose commonkind?

We’re collaborative, community-focused, and committed to supporting your mission. We don’t charge for partnerships, and we co-design service activities that meet your real needs.

+

Can our charity partner with commonkind?

Yes. We love collaborating with charities to support their missions through volunteer-powered service projects.

+

What kind of support can we offer?

We can help with any activity that is related to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals SDG1: No Poverty; SDG2: Zero Hunger and SDG3: Good Health and Wellbeing. We will assess your idea to ensure that it is safe and meaningful for our child, youth and family changemakers.

+

Is there a cost to partner with us?

No. We seek mutually beneficial partnerships and don’t charge charities.
