Interview with Murani Nkuito (Advisor)

Murani Nkuito, a recent school graduate and now a university student, is an open-minded and funny “community connector” driven by a lifelong passion for giving back. From his first volunteering experience distributing food to widows in Kenya to his days mentoring kids through soccer in Brisbane, Murani has always found his greatest joy in making others happy. Having previously led our Child and Youth Advisory Group, he now joins commonkind as an our Advisor for Youth Experience. Over an ice-cold Pepsi Max, Murani shared a little more about himself and his passion for community.

Question 1: Why did you join commonkind?

To advocate and be an ambassador to those who don’t have a voice and help people with the opportunities I have had.

Question 2: What were you like as a child?

I was a friendly kid who loved playing outdoors, making new friends and reading books.

Question 3: What was your first volunteering experience?

Distributing food to widows in Kenya.

Question 4: What has been your most memorable volunteering experience?

Helping young kids with activities in an African Village (Moorooka).

Question 5: What’s the very first job you had (that’s not on your LinkedIn profile) and what did you learn from the experience?

My very first job was giving food out to the widows in my community. I learned the importance of helping others and giving back to my community by supporting people who have shared knowledge and experience. It taught me the value of kindness and service.

Question 6: What do you do for fun?

Read books and play soccer.

Question 7: What motivates you?

The urge to help people in need.

Question 8: How do you practice self-compassion?

By noticing when I’m being harsh to myself and replacing that inner criticism with kinder, more understanding thoughts. Remind myself that mistakes and struggles are part of being human, and treat myself with the same patience and care I would offer a friend.  

Question 9: If you could give adults one piece of advice, what would it be? 

Don’t be so serious!
